I've had a good think about what you have written CBB and agree mostly with what you have had to say, however I guess these days I give for three reasons when I come to Bali. Firstly I have found an orphanage where they have "stuff all" and rely solely on donations from the likes of fellow tourists to simply survive. I know you're not refering to these needy ones. I feel so blessed to have them in my life and believe me come away a better person after each visit. I am rewarded by being kept in their thoughts and prayers.
The second reason I give is because I have made some dear friends after coming to Bali for 20years now, and just like I give my family gifts for their birthdays etc, I also give them gifts when I have not seen them for a while. Some of these friends may be wealthy and others just earning earning enough to get by, the thing is its a gift of friendship. I do from time to time also give some clothing to the beach girls, they can do what they want with these, I dont care if they wear them or sell them. I understand that many Australians may be "ripped off" but you know, if they are happy to give and continue giving and it doesnt hurt them, then whats the issue? Most people that come to Bali often would have a pretty good idea how they operate....cheers Carmel
