Presents for hotel staff

I'm visiting Bali for my second time in a few weeks, and I have heard of people giving presents to the hotel staff, and as I'm staying in a smaller place this time, (not a large resort) I want to plan to take something with me in anticipation of good service. I have seen suggestions of giving staff pencils and colouring books etc for their children as they would be items not readily bought on their poor wages. What do people think, or do you have other ideas? I love giving presents.
