People's experiences will obviously be different depending on where they go, what they do and who they see. My family travels to Bali frequently and have never had any issue ... ever. Well, there was a taxi driver once who refused to turn the meter on but that's about it. And we've always received the most courteous and hospitable treatment - everywhere in Indonesia, in fact, not just Bali. I guess that there's an element of luck of the draw. Mind you, while we're not exactly old, we don't hang around the booze barns or find ourselves on the streets late at night, the same circumstances that heighten risk in Australia, New Zealand etc. And maybe that's really the point. Bali is a wonderful place but many parts of it are completely Westernised and when Westerners are in those parts, behaving like they do back home, it shouldn't be a surprise when the same dangers lurk.
