I wouldn't dare walk alone on any street where I live at night. I also tend to use taxis more in Bali than I used to, depending where it is that I have to walk.
The world has changed. We need to change the way we live in it to keep ourselves safe, no matter where we are. I've seen CCTV footage of people having the crap beaten out of them just for walking alone at night through the local mall/bar area. They should be allowed to do it safely, but that's just not possible anymore.
Do whatever feels right to you. If that means not going to Bali anymore, then that's the right solution for you.
