The fact that they are there is hidden in the name of the attraction.
It's a monkey forest.
They are not daft.
"Hide" bananas in your pocket and they will be onto you.
I have been to Bali many many times and have never been bitten by anything (Except the rabid timeshare guy in Kuta Square once)
I think it's about the way you present yourself, and not going around poking things with sticks or teasing them with food.
In the monkey forest it's often more fun watching the people than the monkeys, not that we go there too much these days.
