Some people can panic a little when taking out the braids as it seems like a lot of hair is falling out. This is just the hair that would have fallen out anyway if the hair wasn't braided - it just gets trapped in there is all.
I have heard a few stories about extensions that needed to be cut out and ruined hair, but never just braiding.
As for the advice about staying out of the sun - that applies not just while having it braided, but afterward as well. Make sure a hat is worn, as the scalp is exposed all around the braids and, since it doesn't normally see sunlight like that, can burn very badly.
