So true. A rellie is a friend to a Balinese family and has known them for over 10 years and they asked her not to buy bikes for the children anymore as it caused resentment with the other locals and they were really nasty to them. I myself give to a hawker lady more than I give to the others and sometimes I get a nasty comment from them. Giving $20 to a porter is a persons right but you must also realise that when the average Balinese worker only earns 20,000rp to 30,000rp a day it does make them think that everyone should pay this amount. I have found many of the porters on the inward journey are always asking and some demanding anywhere from $20 to $50.
