not sure what matsaleh's intention was in their post, but it is interesting to note that what can be a sign of goodwill on a westeners part may cause offence to others. I would hope that they were trying to point this out rather than having a go at you. take the example of giving a particular waiter/waitress an extra $20 dollars or gift of some sort - it may cause resentment to other staff, why was I not worthy of getting the same? also, tips are not part of Balinese culture, its a western thing. I used to drag all our unwanted stuff to our favorite waitress at the end of our trip in front of all her colleagues but now we will do this in private so we are not sending a message to the others that "your not worthy to get this" so maybe unintentionally you are doing this with porters?? just another thought.
