I would never go to Centro (aka Discovery Plaza) in the late afternoon when bus loads of often Indonesian tourists arrive to see the sunset. Lots of people with back packs & the security staff have a hard time checking all of them, if they bother. And many access it from the beach side where there are crowds watching the sunset. In any case, the traffic is vile then.
Kuta Square is also a place I avoid other than in the mornings when it is uncrowded. I don't go to night clubs.
I do prefer places that are set back from the road with good security.
