I've been to Bali quite a few times, and done it really cheap, to relatively expensive. Happens with age I think.
You can live pretty much on the beach very cheaply and spend very little.
You can make it a really hassly holiday, with loads of running around and getting approached by local people to buy things you don't want. Everyone's gotta earn a living.
You can have a lovely relaxing family holiday by just going shopping occasionally, and doing fun stuff or relaxing the rest of the time.
You can have a totally romantic getaway and stay in the most sublime accommodation.
You can live like total royalty in almost total seclusion.
Just gotta take your pick.
I used to do too much rushing out, chasing bargains, getting hot, and not relaxing enough. This is a woman who never takes a family!! I leave them at home and travel there with my friend.
Now much more balanced. I don't spend much time at all in Kuta or Legian anymore Mainly Seminyak. I do go into Denpasar to a few select shops, then relax in Ubud. Boring for families but fine for me.
So anyway, I'm sure you can find a way to make Bali work for you as well as the kiddie winks.
