I purchased a large painting in Ubud a few years ago and made the decision to get it taken off the frame and had it rolled and carried it on the plane myself. I layed it on top of everyones luggage in the overhead locker. Mind you it cost me a fortune to have it placed on a frame back here but I was not going to risk customs seizing the frame plus the hassle of paying for it to go in the cargo area. I am sure there may be a better way to do this and look forward to reading the responses you receive.
