You can take it with you and hope they can unlock it for around $20-ish (but they can't do all phones, particularly the less common ones). Or you can buy a cheap unlocked phone from somewhere like Harvey Norman for around $20-ish.

If you bought your phone outright, it's most likely not unlocked and you can ignore the above info. :)

If you're not sure, get someone you know who uses a different phone carrier and put their SIM in your phone. If it works, your phone is unlocked.

Then all you need to do is go somewhere that sells SIM cards - which is generally not hard to find - they're all over. They'll set it all up for you, and if they don't automatically show you how to go about calling home cheaply, ask them and they will.
