I would definitely recommend going ashore with a tour organised by the cruise ship, as they will definitely be better organised with buses booked for their passengers. Most cruises have a couple of options, I am sure there would be an Ubud trip which sometimes gives a couple of free hours. I would not want to risk having a private driver not get me back to the ship in time, especially as it is so chaotic at the port areas.
