I made a mistake when booking Garuda flights where my usual given names did not concur with my passport name (didn't have it with me at the time).
Result? $250 in re-booking fees, despite turning up at the Garuda offices and arguing the point face-to-face. My agent could do nothing either.
Lesson? Get it absolutely right first time. The airlines are extremely inflexible on this, and hide behind the law to justify the charges, which are usually NOT negotiable.
I would agree that insurance on the original ticket for sickness, seems to be the best bet.
