Well I certainly wish my son had understood when told how to behave at a few months old! I am however fortunate that my two kids now 3 and 6 have behaved wonderfully 9 out of 10 times when flying and they have racked up about 50 flights between them! This might only be because they've never been on a flight longer than 3 hours duration.

I do understand that on a longer flight some people may need a nap but my example was on a 2 hour flight from Bali to Hedland during the middle of the day- in normal circumstances I would NEVER let my children kick seats or stand up holding the chair in front etc as I myself dont like it.
I'd have to argue that on a plane life does have to revolve around the kids as you need to make sure they are happy with toys or whatever needed to keep them amused then they wont misbehave and TA-DA everyone else on the plane can be happy too!
My kids always take a little case full of colouring ins and fave toys and that seems to work for them.
