Leave for Java the day before and stay 2 nights in Banyuwangi. It's about a 3 hour drive to the ferry from Kuta or Sanur and then an hour to an hour and a half across. On the road to Banyuwangi from the ferry (around 15 mins) there are heaps of hotels. Java is cheap, as an example the first nice hotel you come to on the road to Banyuwangi is the Berlian Abadi (0333 427 688) and rooms vary from about US$12 to US$20 per night.
A car on the ferry is Rp114,000 (about US$12) regardless of the number of passengers.
Google Banyuwangi or Kawah Ijen for stuff to do there; personally I love going over to Java for a change of scenery.
