As you're no doubt aware G-land is a surfers playground so not sure it will suit you and the kids.
If you and hubby are willing to part ways for the day you can easily spend a day around Banyuwangi while he surfs though I recommend you stay in or near the town as hotels at G-land might be too basic.
The south coast near G-land actually has the world's largest Mangrove area with little boat tours and a turtle hatchery (for release NOT eating).
My youngest is now 9 yrs and we are all going up Kawa Ijen next week. We went to Bromo about 6 years ago so if you don't find it too far it's a greta place for the family - hire horses and ride across the sea of sand inside the Bromo crater (a lot tamer than it sounds).
