Hi - for a learner Sanur is not going to work. you need to catch a boat to the reef to get to the waves and then if it is surfable it is going to be pretty hard core.

My suggestion would be to get a local surf guide to take you to the best option on the day (expect to pay around RPH 600k per day).

Failing that then I'd say Kuta reef could be an option if the conditions are right - hubbie takes the boat to the reef, son grovels around in the shore. Canggu could be an option as there are reef and beach breaks. Be careful though as there are dangerous currents (definitely at Canggue, possibly also at other beaches). Maybe padang padang could be worth a look - good waves for husband and safe swimming for son but probably not many waves for body boarding. Nice beach though.

If you want a recommendation on a surf guide feel free to email me (email open). I have a local surf guide I use who is great and he has also worked for ripcurl surf school in the past so he could probably give your son some surfing lessons if you wanted him to.
