because you're reading reviews from people used to chi-chi places who choose Seminyak but are unfamiliar with Bali generally. Bali is pretty stinky wherever you go, toilet wise. Someone might be able to correct/confirm, but I don't think their toilets have those pipes ours have to release gases.
