Cairns to Bali flights

Hi,
Looking for suggestions here as I am sure others have had similar quandaries.
We are flying our son with his girlfriend and 10month old daughter from Cairns to Bali next August to be there with us for my 50th birthday.
Problem: What is the best way to get them from Cairns to Bali?

Our itinerary will actually be Darwin - Singapore (or Bali depending on cost) - KL - Phuket (possible back to KL) - Bali - Darwin.

Would it be cheaper for us to fly them Cairns to KL then Bali?
