We were married in Bali in 1983 at the Catitan Cipil (Indonesian Registry Office) where we got a Marriage Certificate, in Indonesian, of course. (Also had a huge traditional Balinese wedding but that of course doesn't count as legal as Jerry Hall discovered.)
On return to Aust all I needed to do was have an official translation of our Marriage Cert done by Dept Foreign Affairs which was fine for changing my name on my Passport & for all my bank accounts etc. It has sufficed for anything I have needed a Marriage Cert for since then.
Why not just call Foriegn Affairs to find out exactly what the deal is now rather than rely on what might be out of date (as in my case) or just wrong info? Nothing like getting the info from the horses mouth.
