How do you decide where to stay?

My husband has left me responsible for booking the accom for our next trip in Feb. Whilst I really easily found and booked the first 5 nights in Sanur I am at a loss as to how to choose the last 9 nights in Legian/Kuta area.

I am really torn between larger resorts like Bali Garden, smaller like Rama Garden etc or villa. We have stayed in smaller hotels and villas before (thought to try both types with young kids) and are pretty budget minded with not wanting to pay more that AUD$170 per night. We have only ever stayed in Legian and are not sure about elsewhere.

So my question is how do people make the decision on where to stay? I get overwhelmed when spoiled by choice!
