The last time I looked Australians are the first people to help out in most crisis, whether it be earthquakes, floods, fires. Its our taxes that go into relief work. Our taxes also support single parents, the unemployed, drug addicts to name a few. It may grate some people that we pay these things but would you want to live in a country where they didn't?
Where is the line drawn on who to help, the solo sailor who costs the country thousands to rescue? the bushwalker who gets lost? the tourists stranded in an uprising overseas? or the 14 year old boy who made a huge mistake in a foreign country.
