Book for a decent spell (say three weeks) and from there make your decisions re the rest of the stay as you will have a feel for it then.
The Bali Advertiser is a good source of info and you can find other accommodation options (more remote?) there.
You are "Bali inexperienced", and with small kids and it may pay to be not too far from medical or other help if needed initially.
You will probably need to drive as well to get about, so consider this too.
It will be tail end of the wet season too, so "Paradisiac beaches"??
Maybe, but be aware that Bali is not exactly the Bahamas in that respect.
