I came home from Bali recently and found an account from Telstra, $1027 data usage.
I had rung them to enquire about using my iPhone whilst overseas and decided it was way too expensive.
(I always have a second phone with a Bali sim card).
The call centre person didnt suggest ways I could still use my iPhone but not generate a massive data bill.

My iPhone was constantly roaming and connecting, even though I wasnt intentionally connecting to the internet.
There is a solution....
You can turn off your data/internet usage, but still receive/make calls and sms. Go into
Settings, then
General, then
Network, then
select off for Enable 3G, Cellular data etc all to OFF.

You can also connect to airplane mode.

Use your iPhone ONLY when in free wifi places, BUT DONT FORGET to switch off the internet when you leave.

Telstra are crediting me for the entire amount after I rang them and pleasantly discussed the issue.
