My cousin arrived back yesterday after attending a conference in Bali. I gave him a long list of dos and dont's however he still got stung at DPS airport by porters who told him they were customs officers. These two guys grabbed the 2 bags (my cousin had only taken hand luggage - so one small bag and a small backpack) escorted him through as they were xrayed and then took him to a money changer and demanded $300.
As he needed some cash anyway, he handed over a $50 note and these guys said not enough. In the end he changed $100 and was then told they wanted Rp400,000 to hand over the bags. He offered Rp100,000, the guy said Rp200,000 so he handed that over. Then the 2nd "customs officer" demanded the same amount. Stupidly my cousin paid even though my notes said - 'do not let the porters touch your bags'!!! So beware!
