Poor bugger - its a tough way to learn a lesson and unfortunately he wont be the first nor the last to suffer the same fate.
Tell him to firstly report his passport as lost. Then he needs to do a priority application (see link) and beg and barter for them to fast track his application. Realistically it will take 48 hours.
Then it is down to his airline to allow him to change his ticket (or not). Best to call direct and again beg and plead immaturity/insanity/folly of youth.
