Lauren...the reply from Sassy re your "comfort zone" was most uncalled for.
Advice given by Suzie B was perfect.
I personally have 17 sponsored children, my children have two, and combined with two other friends, we have a collective total of more than 50 children...all through the Education Assistance Program of John Fawcett Foundation in Sanur.
As it is Tax deductible and I own a small business I can afford this by claiming from my business. It is tax deductible even if you only sponsor one child as a private person.
Primary children are $100 per year....Secondary are $150 per year and High School are $200 per year. This does not cover all costs, but helps with uniforms, books and exam costs. All money spent has to be accounted for by the recipient, and often the Teacher will keep a record book. The Ed Assist team does a great job in monitoring all and ensuring they are genuinely needy.
Corruption in the orphanage industry in Bali is high...if you are not careful sponsorship money can just go straight into an Orphanage slush fund. Stick to the tried and proven.
There are currently over 130 children waiting for sponsorship at Ed Assist... all have been assessed and proven needy by JFF and in locations through out Bali...Yes, even Legian
John Fawcett,...proven, totally organised and professional, always open to meeting you, or providing info on your child. Meet your child when you visit. Very affordable. Do visit them in Sanur when you next go. See SuzieB's post.
BaliKids (costs are higher here as kids also get extra lessons in computer, English, Dance (great for Trauma). I also sponsor the annual wages of a Nurse here for $3000 per year. (Tax deductible again) Yes, that is their wage! They are at Mengwi between Kuta and Ubud. I visit 3 times a year.
The Helen Flavel Foundation is also a most honorable and hardworking provider of education to the poor families in North Bali. Their Learning Centre is fantastic. Check their website.
Jodie O'Shea Orphanage in Denpasar is also worth checking out and maybe a visit on your next trip. The children are exceptionally well looked after here (proving that donations get to the children)
I personally prefer to sponsor children who are living with their very needy families, and often have to combat hunger and lack of basic items in their daily lives.
Lots of food for thought for you Lauren.. Please sponsor a child and encourage your family and friends to do the same. Well done for your interest
