We had many family holidays visiting many off the tourist trail places with hubby behind the wheel. Round Bali via medewi, lovina, a med and ubud. Also ventured over to lombok and sumbawa using car ferries. Never had many problems and only paid one fine to police in around 17trips.
We used a place in melasti st but can't remember the name at the moment. Good maps can be found at Bintang supermarket. I was always the navigator and used the shop signs that have the village name on to keep track of where we were, never got totally lost. Most of the car hire places are fine and average price for 2 weeks would be around 180,000rp a day.
