I agree with you that it must have been a 50000 and not 500000. Thats my point, if he thought he gave the driver 500000 why would he accept 25000 change and not query it. Even on your first day and unused to the currency you could not miss being short changed by Rp450000. Also, assuming he thought he had a 500000 note in his hand, who would hand over a note that big for a 25000 fare and expect the driver to have change?
How did he come to have an empty wallet after the icecreams etc? Did he just hand over money without looking at what he was handing over? The taxi story makes me think yes.
Sure Skiggy, I have come unstuck plenty of times while overseas but I don't whinge and whine about it and blame my own stupidity on the locals or run the country I am visiting down and refuse to trust anybody.
Like I said, he is an idiot.
PS: I actually think he is fabricating this and trying to wind us all up.
