You could try Masa Inn in Poppies 1 - hot water, 2 pools, fridge, aircon, sat TV & cheap. Easy to book online. No pre-payment required, just pay for one night on arrival. It's a busy & deservedly popular place but booking for one night usually isn't a problem. A short walk to Hard Rock & a good base to look for other hotels in the area.
Lima Satu Cottages mentioned below looks pretty good for the price with air con & pool. No on-line booking, though. Plenty of budget hotels in that area, especially down the lane ways.
The airport drivers are mostly a surly bunch, most unhelpful. With a small child to consider, I'd definitely book a room in advance then wander around looking dozens of hotels in that area.
