In 8 or so trips I've never had anything stolen. Neither have any family members or anyone I know in all their trips to Bali.
I use ATMs so don't have large amounts of cash to worry about.
I still can't figure out though, why your family member left $300 in a suitcase when the hotel provides double keyed safe deposit boxes at reception.
