Perhaps the bigger worry is the papers that are possibly stored with the cash....passports etc.
I don't see the point in just making a note of how much you have got.....all that confirms for you is how much has been stolen, if not the whole lot !!
Better that valuables are totally concealed from view and temptation.
Possibly a small hard shell suitcase or cabin bag with a decent lock is an option (zipped ones aren't much good) or there are certainly small suplimentary keep safes that could be used in conjunction with the security boxes or room safes.
Perhaps it is also possible to create a hidden pocket in one of your suitcases as whoever is doing the thieving will want to be pretty quick about it.....and the room next door may be an easier target !!
