Once they've got your $ you're pretty well guaranteed poor service. By all means, check out the room & if it suits you pay 2 or 3 nights in advance. If you are pleased after a few nights then, depending on the length of your stay, you could pay a week in advance.
Be sure to check out the sheets, make sure power points & lights work & are adequate, loo flushes etc. If not happy, say so & don't pay any $ until you are satisfied.
