Mate firstly forget that Fugly site yu mention that guy has an axe to grind with anything Bali.
Kuta and Sanur are chalk and cheeze but give me Sanur anytime, yes its quieter but sometimes you need a refuge from the all the hustle and bustle and as you say a $7 cab ride gets you to Kuta.
A single guy on a budget you couldn't do better than the Senia and there are literally dozens of bars and pubs within walking distance. Senia is also great if you are a footy fan with live aussie footy on the big screen (see more on the link below).
As for the Vegemite I would take the previous advice and buy a plastic tube of it to take over. [Funny story we took some over a few trips back, the customs uy saw it and asked what it was. I explained we spread it on our toast and I opened it and put some on my finger and tasted. I offered him some and I was shocked when he agreed yo try it....man you should have seen the face he pulled]. :-)
