In reality you are only carrying the cash until you get to your hotel or between hotels,same as your travel documents.
Splitting cash as you do is the best way as there is less likelihood of you loosing it all or the majority of it.
A big problem is the amount of people who rely on credit cards for spending money because they want the points or have all their spendable money tied up in a mortgage and live on credit until the end of the month.
