Having done the drive from Sanur to Amed a few times, I dont think I would recommend it as a day trip. Its a very long way to be stuck in the car, have a quick dive, swim and lunch and then head all the way back. Amed is a lovely spot, but you would probably have just as nice a time at Candi Dasa. There are some good dive spots, and some good restaurants. The views from the car does not change an awful lot from Candi Dasa north, from memory you do go over a small mountain range. We once did the trip as an overnighter, and I thought it was too far for that. Just my opinion tho.
