I would never change money at the hotel (rip you off with a smile) as there are many good money changers in Kuta legian etc. If you change $100 at a time, and have someone with you, its easy to calculate and 2 people counting is better. If you want smaller denominations change them after you do the major exchange. I liked to get smaller notes for the cabs and incidentals as another good trick if you hand over big bills is to claim "no change boss". Don't change money when you are drunk and don't let a stranger be helpful with ATMs etc. Scams are everywhere and unless you keep your wits your a target. Its not hard to do just don't hand over money until you get what you are owed and take all the time you want and if the rate seems to good to be true then it usaully is. We had a crack at a dodgy guy for a laugh and 4 big blokes stood over him till we got our money and he asked us not to come back again. Don't be nervous Its fun!
