To counteract that sort of fraud - we have opened a debit account that we only use for holidays. We transfer our spending money into that account, and then we get home transfer any money left in it (not usually!) back to our everyday account. We have a card each issued on the account - and this only accesses that account. We only use it in ATM's...dont tend to use a credit card in Bali for the very reasons you mention. Like you - only use one in an emergency, although my understanding is that if you use a Visa or Mastercard and have money taken fraudulently then there is inbuilt insurance from the credit companies. This is only what we do and I am not saying it works better than Travelex in all cases - but in our experience it has. Even with the extra account fees......
