Firstly, Airasia are an absolutely incredible airline and if they can help you they will. You can email them via their site and they do reply within 5 days (as stated).I have been using them for over 5 years and am still gobsmacked (thanks Pauline) in their customer service/PR skills. If forumites want to know just how good they are, and what they have done for me over the years, then just ask and I'll do a post. More recently they did this: I am in Saigon on Aug 23, my daughter calls me, my sister gravely ill. Went to their office and booked connections home that day via KL. Due to heavy rain it took me over two hours to go 6km in a taxi to the airport. I missed that flight! I was placed on the later flight to KL-the fee? 25% surcharge on original fare-bargain! Other budget airlines (Tigerair suck!)would have charged me the full fare again. The latter flight leaves late-hardly any time to connect in KL with the 2350 flight to Perth. Nearer to KL a flight attendant phones the tower to mention my plight. Was set up that I check into a certain checkin counter-no lights on but somebody will be home. I checked in half an hour before departure, where the minimum to Oz is 1 hour.I abandoned my baggage to save time-what do they do? Go get my luggage for me!!
Now, You need to weigh up the ammendment fees with AA against the excess fee if claiming travel insurance. On the AA site go to 'terms and conditions' all fees are listed as per country of origin. The problem you face is that, I expect you have 1 itinerary for 2 people-hmmm poses a problem to change as dad cannot go. I would ammend the flight to leave the day after as you said. Then if Mum has another travelling companion, go to a name change to add that person.
I do not think you can just cancel and get money back. If it's better for you to cancel and claim insurance (less the excess) understand that you will have to purchase a new ticket with AA. If you bought the previous one on a bargain sale you may lose heavily. Good luck, hope dads ok, my sister came out of danger and I flew back to resume my trip 4 days after returning.
