My first trip to Bali was as a 21yo with my 18yo brother. Neither us, nor our parents had ever been anywhere outside of Australia before but the two of us managed to research and book our holiday on our own. We didn't even have the internet for research in those days, lol.
In 2 weeks, our sole contact with home was a reverse charges call when we got to the hotel to let the olds know we got there ok, and a postcard we sent them that arrived home a day before we did!
Great holiday too. We had a ball, shopped, partied, discovered and fell in love with the culture and people - and bailed ourselves out of any problems we encountered, such as they were.
We packed our own bags too, lol. But we'd also done that as kids going on family holidays anyway.
