If I am going out at night I generally use a small bag which slips onto my belt, it is big enough to hold some money and a small phone, just like a small pouch, I also try to wear pants that have couple of extra pockets for other bits and pieces. It leaves my hands free and also much harder for someone passing by to try and grab. I must say though I have had this type of pouch opened in a crowded place and didn't even feel it. At night just leave your atm cards etc in the safe and take enough cash for the evening. If I withdraw a large sum of money in Bali or in Australia I often put it in my bra. My advise if you are being robbed in Bali, let them take the money and they will take off very fast, in Australia they will often rob you and then give you a beating anyway just for the heck of it.
