Why would you not pay the extra couple of bucks to pre book your preferred seats when you made the booking? Clearly there was confusion when checking in on your return leg but please dont play the racial discrimination card. It was bedlam but you got on your flight. Unfortunately one of your bags went astray, crappy stuff happens.
