I usually pay $6 to $8 per night accommodation ( splurge is $10)
$5-9 per day for food and water ( drink tea and coffee courtesy fo teh accommodation most mornings- cheaper places often throw in a jaffle of pancake for brekky too)
travel- either by loca transport (less available than in years con by ) or by tourist bus (Parawisata) -an example is 15000 Rp Kuta to Candi dasa.

so on a normal day my expenditure all up is less than $20.

I enjoy this way and get to meet more local people. Don't really do any shopping unless something very special takes my eye as the majority of stuff around is failry trashy.
had an excellent time in 2007 with daughter when we went for three weeks (including trip to Yogya) and total spend each was under $300 plus airfare. We ate well, we slept well, we travelled well---well perhsp not the overnight bus to Yogya but we did return that way so it was doable.

really it is a matter of how much you can afford adn the type of holiday you want. i could just as easily spend hundreds of dollars each day, dont begrudge those who do, just doesn't suit me
