in 1981, although the Rajah was no longer there. A rather magic place at the time. Djajani's was where we usually ate at night. One night, after perhaps more libations than usual, five of us were walking back, side by side, along the dark road. We came to a bridge which was narrower than the road, and the guy on the end walked off and fell two metres to the creek bed. I didn't have to be sober to realise he'd done his tibia and fibula. Long story short, following treatment at Singaraja hospital, he was unable to change his ticket and decided it would be cheaper to convalesce in Bali anyway (what insurance?). Djajani felt sorry for him, as he'd supplied the Bintangs & arak, and put him up in a room behind the warung for a month or so, at nominal cost. Djajani had had a possibly checquered relationship with the polisi, yet I subsequently was persuaded to help fund a business venture for him. Which was the last time I heard of him. He was a bit of a charmer.
