The longest way is to go overland.
Once I realized that my 30 day visa would expire in eight days time, I went by bus and train to Jakarta from Bali. Refusing to stay even one night in Jakarta, I accepted an offer from a sailor I met on a bus and and went by Haj ship to Padang. I slept two nights in the one of the cargo holds with the other 3,000 passengers.
After a night in Padang, I caught a bus to Bukitinggi, then took a 24 hour ride in a converted truck to Lake Toba. There I got lost in the jungle and lost all my toe nails. From there, I caught a bemo to Medan and flew to Penang.
This was my first trip to Bali.
