I have to declare my interest as my wife owns a travel agency and we're all for beating Flight Centre and we certainly don't begrudge people who book their own trips on the NET but we always encourage people to make sure their hotel exists and they leave plenty of time to make their connecting flights.
Long story but even friends of ours booked on the NET and they ended up in London with three kids standing in front of a fish and chip shop.......They had travel insurance so they were OK but still it wasn't such a good experience, and they put too much salt on the chips.
We laugh about it now. Hang, "we" laugh about it now. I think they're still scarred.
