There seems to be people sitting on both sides of the fence on this issue. I have just been on the Australian Department of Immigration website which isn't very clear (a phone call may make it all make sense), but the www.smarttraveller.gov.au website say that you need at least 6 months left on your passport from the date you arrive in Bali. 'Arrival' and 'Departure' seem to be the operative words. Some websites dont mention either word, which isn't very helpful. I know that some people would think 'get them renewed anyway' but with 3 children who haven't used their passports very much at all (in their 5 year issue), you just want to get the most out of them as they arent cheap to get. It could well be another couple of year until we travel overseas again, so the longer I leave the passport remewal the better for them. Oh I wish that they had 10 year passports like us in the adult world!!
