If I were you I would say stuff it and get the kids passports renewed before you go away. Diffenrent languages, cultures and unclear laws makes it to risky to mess around with. The last thing you need is to be turned away from the airport either in Australia or Bali after waiting so long for you holiday, or risking intimidation or bribes.
