You MAY be able to use Aus dollars to pay for SOME things eg tours, saving you having to constantly change money. I ran out of rupiah at a factory outlet, nowhere near a money changer, so they hesitantly let me buy with Aus dollars.

BE CAREFUL when changing large amounts of money - all those zeroes may do your head in. My golden rule is; if the changer picks up the money, after he has counted it out onto the counter, he IS going to scam you. Pick up your Aus dollars or TC and walk away-you WILL NOT win. The bait is a better exchange rate - I don't even bother trying these changers these days.
